For more than a century, General San Martin Park has been one of the
most important green urban places in Argentina due to its extension
and its proximity to Mendoza city. At present, the park has 307
cultivated hectares (760 acres), 17km (11 miles) in roads and 82
hectares (202, 63 acres) surface.
November 6th, 1.896, Law Nº 19 was approved to create the
West Park, original name of the area.
The architect Carlos Thays, well-known French landscape gardener,
was appointed to project the plan where both English and French
gardening traditions from the XIX century are combined.
The gates make the main entrance hierarchical. These were placed
there in 1,909 and are crowned by the figure of the condor and the
shield of Mendoza.
The
more than 300 kinds of trees, original from North America, Asia,
Europe and Australia have made a green planet, full of roads and
streets specially made to enjoy the park in a better way.
Besides, the park can be considered an open air museum with 34
sculptures that decorate paths and gardens.
Tourists and visitors have at their disposal restaurants, camping
sites, barbecue places, services and transfers and guided tours on
comfortable minibuses.
Surrounded by a great variety of roses and sculptures, we find the
Rose Garden, a French style walking area, which was finished in
1,919.
Besides, the magnificent view is based on the splendor of the
artificial lake in the park, a work of great magnitude that began in
1.906 and since then, it has offered regatta lovers a place to
practice this sport.
