THE WINE ROADS
Through the Wine Roads you will able to visit several family
wineries of Mendoza and enjoy their excellent wines, which are
the results of an ecological viticulture and have – especially
the reds – a high antioxidant activity associated with its
content of different types of polyphenols.
According to recent scientific studies, this contributes to halt
the aging of the arteries and other organs. The moderate
consumption of wine has the virtue of harmonizing the pleasure
with a considerable improvement in the quality of life.
Over the past three years, there was a major conversion of
vineyards. During that period, in our province were introduced
more than 25,000 hectares of new varieties of fine grapes. Among
the reds, the ranking is led by the Malbec variety, followed by
strains of Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Bonarda, and among the
white the dominating varieties are Chardonnay and Chenin.
The area suitable for the growing of grapes extends itself along
the Andes Mountains from the province of Salta in the North to
Rio Negro in the South of the country. The vast extension of
this area, combined with the particular topography of the Andean
valleys, allows the cultivation of a wide range of stock
varieties.
The Wine Roads listed below have been planned as a half a day or
a full day tour, during which you will visit wineries with very
different characteristics. You will walk through their vineyards;
have a tasting with an option of buying wines in the same
wineries. In addition, you will be able to enjoy other scenic,
historical and cultural attractions.
The Midwest Oasis
Located in the North of the province, this oasis is irrigated by
the Mendoza River; it is located on the foothills (between 650
and 1,060 metres above sea level) and mainly covers the
vineyards in the departments of Luján de Cuyo and Maipú. Because
of the characteristics of soil and climate, it is the most
important fine wines production area, both red and white.
The Wine Roads Valle Viejo (City, Guaymallén, and Godoy Cruz)
Leaving from downtown Mendoza you will be able to visit the
Museum at the Foundation area, where there are the
archaeological remains of the old city. Then, you will visit two
centenarian wineries: Winery and Vineyards Santa Ana (founded in
1891), with its unique architecture from the end of the
nineteenth century that is combined with a modern bottling plant,
and Escorihuela Gascón Winery (1884), which preserves one of the
most important vats in the world, in addition to the original
furniture. The later winery is known for supporting local
artists through its permanent exhibitions of art in the art room.
The Wine Roads of Acéquias and Groves (Maipú)
Lopez Winery (1898) in the heart of Gutiérrez, Maipú, is one of
the most traditional of Argentina. Founded and managed by a
family originally from Andalusia, it has been exporting wine for
more than 70 years to several countries around the world.
